CertainTeed ShingleMaster — and what that means for your roof
HomeVenture holds the ShingleMaster credential from CertainTeed. Most roofers in our area do not. Here is what the credential exists to do for you.
What this means for your warranty
Four things change when HomeVenture installs your roof:
- Non-prorated coverage stretches from 10 years to 50 years of 100% material and labor protection
- Tear-off and disposal costs are covered (most standard warranties don't cover this)
- Wind warranty changes from a capped speed limit to unlimited wind velocity
- The warranty is fully transferable for 15 years if you sell your home
A standard CertainTeed warranty covers material defects at 100% for the first 10 years. After that, the coverage starts pro-rating. By year 20, the homeowner is paying for most of the cost of a replacement out of pocket. Most homeowners do not read the warranty paperwork closely enough to know this.
Because we hold the ShingleMaster credential, we can offer the SureStart Plus 3-Star extended warranty on CertainTeed Landmark shingles installed as a complete CertainTeed Integrity Roof System.
| What you get | Standard CertainTeed warranty | HomeVenture SureStart Plus 3-Star |

The 50-year non-prorated coverage applies to single-family detached homes. Condos, HOAs, commercial structures, and properties not used as the owner's residence are covered for 25 years instead.
Unlimited wind velocity warranty
Most roofing warranties have a wind speed cap somewhere between 110 and 160 miles per hour. Above that wind speed, you are on your own.
A CertainTeed Landmark roof installed as part of the Integrity Roof System by a credentialed contractor is qualified for an unlimited wind velocity warranty. There is no cap.
A few things have to be true for this warranty to apply:
- The shingles have to be CertainTeed Landmark or an equivalent qualifying product
- The full Integrity Roof System has to be installed, which means CertainTeed starter strips, CertainTeed hip and ridge shingles, and the other system components
- The installation has to be performed by a contractor with an active CertainTeed credential
- The property has to be a single-family detached home you own and live in to qualify for the full 50-year non-prorated coverage
If you want a roof that will not be the cheapest available option, but you want a warranty that holds up when a real storm hits, this is what we install.
We walk through the warranty paperwork with you before the project starts, so you know exactly what is covered and what is not. No fine print surprises.
What a CertainTeed ShingleMaster is — in plain language
CertainTeed has been making roofing materials since 1904. ShingleMaster is a credential they award to roofing companies that have proven they install the company's products to a specific standard. The credential exists because most warranty claims that get denied come down to one thing: the shingles were installed incorrectly.
To earn and maintain the credential, a roofing company has to:
- Pass technical knowledge tests on shingle materials, installation procedures, and roof system design
- Maintain current general liability insurance and workers' compensation coverage
- Employ at least one staff member who has earned the Master Shingle Applicator credential
- Commit to a code of ethics CertainTeed enforces
The credential is not bought. There is no online course you complete in an afternoon to earn it. It is a working relationship between the roofer and the manufacturer.
Why most roofers in our area do not have this credential
The credential is voluntary. A roofing company in Evansville is not required to hold it to install CertainTeed shingles. They can buy the shingles, install them however they want, and offer whatever warranty they want to offer.
But here is the trade-off: a non-credentialed roofer cannot offer CertainTeed's extended warranty programs. The homeowner gets only the basic manufacturer warranty, and if the installation has problems, the homeowner is on their own to prove the work was done correctly.
Earning and maintaining the credential takes time and ongoing investment. It requires staying current on CertainTeed's technical updates, keeping insurance current, and re-testing on the latest installation procedures. Most local roofers do not see the return on that investment because most local homeowners do not know to ask about it.
We hold the credential because homeowners deserve the option. When CertainTeed is the right product for a project, our credential means you also get the strongest warranty CertainTeed offers.
Why HomeVenture pursued it
I am an engineer by training, not a roofer by trade. When I started HomeVenture, I wanted to know that the work we were doing on customers' homes met the same standard as the work the manufacturer would do themselves if they were installing the roof.
The ShingleMaster program is the closest thing to that standard CertainTeed makes available to contractors. So we pursued it. We passed the tests, we maintain the insurance, and we hold the credential.
The credential is not the reason we install good roofs. We install good roofs because we built HomeVenture to do that. The credential is the proof that an outside party — the manufacturer — agrees that we do.
