Asphalt Shingle Comparison | HomeVenture Roofing

The three tiers of shingles we install, compared side by side.

Quick answer

HomeVenture installs three tiers of asphalt shingles: basic 3-tab shingles for budget-conscious replacements, architectural shingles for most homeowners, and premium architectural or Class 4 impact-resistant shingles for high-end homes and severe weather exposure. The comparison table below shows the differences in warranty, wind rating, impact rating, and best-fit application.

When to choose each tier.

Good — 3-tab. The basic 3-tab shingle is a flat, single-layer product with a 25-year limited warranty and a 60 mph wind rating. Most appropriate for budget-conscious replacements, rental properties, or homes the owner does not intend to keep long-term. It is a code-meeting shingle, not a long-term performance shingle.

Better — Architectural Standard. Dimensional architectural shingles like CertainTeed Landmark or Malarkey Highlander give you a lifetime limited manufacturer warranty, a 110–130 mph wind rating, and a multi-layer dimensional profile that reads as a real roof from the curb. This is the right choice for most primary residences. The lifetime warranty is conditional on the install meeting manufacturer specifications — which is part of why our 16-step process matters.

Best — Architectural Premium. Premium dimensional or Class 4 impact-rated shingles like Malarkey Highlander or CertainTeed Landmark Pro are built for severe weather exposure. The Class 4 impact rating is the highest available in residential asphalt and may qualify for an insurance discount, depending on your carrier and policy. Ask your insurance agent before assuming a discount applies.

What affects pricing.

Shingle tier is one input. The rest of the price moves with roof size, pitch, complexity (valleys, dormers, penetrations), decking condition, ventilation work, flashing replacement, and the specific manufacturer accessories that go on the roof. A Good-tier shingle on a complex roof can cost more than a Better-tier shingle on a simple roof. The free inspection produces a written, itemized scope so you can see exactly where the dollars go.

CertainTeed vs Malarkey.

CertainTeed and Malarkey are both top-tier residential shingle manufacturers. CertainTeed has the broader contractor network nationally and is the brand HomeVenture is ShingleMaster-certified to install. Malarkey leans into rubberized SBS-modified asphalt, which stays more flexible across temperature cycles and tends to grip granules longer. Both make Class 3 and Class 4 lines. Both back their products with lifetime limited warranties conditional on a spec install.

We install both. The recommendation in your specific inspection depends on your roof's exposure, the look you want, and how long you intend to own the home.

The shingle choice and the manufacturer warranty.

Every tier's manufacturer warranty depends on the shingle being installed exactly to the manufacturer's published specification — correct nailing pattern, correct starter strips, correct exposure, correct accessories. An under-spec install voids the warranty before the roof is even finished. HomeVenture's 16-step process documents the install against the manufacturer spec at every stage, which keeps the warranty enforceable for its full term.

That documented install record is also what we rely on if the manufacturer ever disputes a defect claim — the photo file and material specs are the evidence we use to push the claim through on your behalf.
